* Here's another old one for you guys to chew on... The original D7 Klingon battle cruiser from TOS... There's nothing like a good packet of blueprints and manuals... K L I N G O N W A R S H I P CLASS ONE CODE D MK VII BACKGROUND & CLASS LISTING Background Of "Klolode" Class: Around Sd 3900, Star Fleet Intelligence began getting indications that the Klingon Fleet was involved in the construction and testing of a new battle- cruiser design. Intelligence intercepts subsequently revealed the configur- ation and component producers for the new "Klolode" class, as well as the Imperial Planning Council's original projections for construction of twenty ships. The existence of a completed "Klolode" class vessel was not verified until Sd 4014.40 when a surveillance drone launched from the Gamma Three Station near Donatu intercepted a coded transmission from the battlecruiser "Gortuk." The name and identification code of this vessel matched those of the third battlecruiser scheduled for completion. Visual transmissions from the drone verified that this was one of the newly designed warships. The first contact with one of the vessels came on Sd 4201.71 when the starship "Constellation" (NCC-1017) discovered an intruder in the Sauran star system in Federation space. An indecisive battle followed, resulting in minor damage to "Constellation" and a hasty retreat to Klingon space for the battle- cruiser, which bore the designation "Atropos" on its hull. As a result of the close observation afforded by the battle, much valuable data concerning the new ship's capabilities and general battleworthiness was obtained. Above all else, it was found to be extremely warp dynamic. Low mass allowed for rapid development of OCM necessary for warp entry. The vessel's extremely smooth hull reflected the then-prevalent view among Klingon designers regarding the balancing of deflector/force field capabilities and warp dynamic qualities. (Subsequent Klingon advances in warp technology have allowed great- er shielding without sacrifice of speed, as first evidenced in the "K't'inga" design). As ships of this class aged the Klingons began selling some of the older ones to the Romulans in exchange for the right to buy their newly-developed cloaking generators. Starship "Enterprise" confirmed suspicions to this effect on Sd 6215.43 when it encountered a pack of three of the "Klolode" class ves- sels under Romulan command. Though the existence of only 21 "Klolode" class battlecruisers has been confirmed, it is believed that a total of 45-60 were built, with some 15 (7 confirmed) having been sold to the Romulan Fleet to date. While for some time it was thought that ships of this aging class would be uprated to match the more powerful but physically similar "K't'inga" configuration, this does not seem to have been the case. The Klingon Imperial Fleet seems content to let the vessels wear themselves out. Listing Of Known "Klolode" Class Battlecruisers: Name (Translation) I.D. To begin with, this is the standard Klingon Battlecruiser seen throughout the original Trek series... It's nominal class name of "Klolode" comes from Alan Dean Foster's Star Trek Log Series (Log 4, his novelization of "The Time Trap")... This ship is called the D7 Battlecruiser (Code D Mark VII), the D designating a Klingon warship whose hull is designed after the Drell (Drell-design), a lizard like creature native to the Klingon homeworld... There's LOTS of confusion over what a D7 Battlecruiser actually is, as there's a major split between how Technical Fandom and FasA interprets these warships... In Tech Fandom only the "Klolode" class is a D7... FasA calls EVERY Klingon warship, aside from the Klingon Bird of Prey, a D7 with a letter suffix appended to indicate subdivision of class... Here's a brief rundown: Technical Fandom Nominal Class Model ------------- ----- "Raxor" D6 "Klolode" D7 "K't'inga" D8 "K'teremny" D9 The "K'teremny" was never seen on the screen, a long, sleek destroyer class looking like a squashed down "K't'inga" starship... The "K't'inga" is a heavy battlecruiser class first appearing in ST-TMP (it's class name coming from the ST-TMP novelization): a "Klolode" with deflector shield plates and lots of neat detail... The "Raxor" and "Klolode" classes are often confused and are similar to the "Constitution" and "Bonhomme Richard" classes in this respect... The "Klolode" is the immediate predecessor to the "K't'inga" with a single photon torpedo tube mounted in her nose, 2 disruptor mounts under her forecastle, and engine nacelles tipped with Bolognium shields... The "Raxor" class, on the other hand, is almost identical except features a sensor array in place of the bow torpedo tube, tractor beam units in place of her forecastle distruptor mounts, and disruptor banks on her engine tips--the Klingon battlecruiser firing on the "Enterprise" in "Elaan of Troyius" was of this class... With the lack of a torpedo tube on the "Raxor" her 2 disruptors are supplemented with phasers: 3 emplacements below the main sensor on the primary hull, 2 banks (of 2 each) on the topside of the secondary hull along with 2 single banks on the lowerside of the secondary hull... The stasis field generator replaces the primary hull's phasers if installed... Obviously the Klingon Empire tried phaser weaponry out on these early starships then realizing the greater efficiency of disruptors switched over... Probably many "Klolode" class ships were originally "Raxor" class, merely refitted... The Reference Report TOs given here are worthy of analysis... The KL I.D.s were first introduced in the novels, though not all these registries were given in the books, as were the CHr I.D.s for Romulan ships... The "Starfire," "Predator," and "Broadsword" were supposedly the three ships encountered in "The Enterprise Incident"... The class ship "Destruction" (or "Klolode") was commanded by Commander Koloth in the first Trek novel "Spock Must Die!"--the same section of the novel interestingly enough says that he first met Kirk during the Xixobrax Jewelworm affair which refers to a non-Trek short story by the author James Blish, and Xixobrax (according to this file) is a Klingon military station located on Korvus VIII where the navigational systems of this class were built! Korvus, in turn, is a star system located within the Empire seen on the Internal Arrangement map published in From The Files of Star Fleet Command which is more popularly seen in Star Trek Maps! Talk about CONTINUITY --I'd like to see F**A research something out like this! Other Klingon star names taken from Maps/Files is Kinkuthanza (which originated in Alan Dean Foster's Star Trek Log 7 novelization of "The Counter Clock Incident": the name of an immortalized Klingon) and Sif... Kazh is of course the Klingon homeworld and the different races I've covered in other files, and Ch'Ri'Han the Romulan homeworld made famous in the Diane Duane novels... The "Klathas" is Commander Kumara's battlecruiser from Foster's novelizations "The Counter Clock Incident" and "The Slaver Weapon"... The "Deviser" was Koloth's ship (yes, another one) from TAS' "More Tribbles, More Troubles"--the Federation Reference Series lists her as Destroyed here, perhaps justifying his command of the "Destruction" in "Spock Must Die!" which is likely set after TOS/TAS... The "Hakask" is from the novel "My Enemy, My Ally" (which gives quite a few "K't'inga" class starships, most are listed in the FRS' "K't'inga" datafile)... The "Klothos" was Commander Kor's battlecruiser in "The Time Trap"... Which brings us to other Treknical references... Most of which referring to the D7 are really describing the "Raxor" configuration... Including the Star Fleet Handbook and the excellent Book Of General Plans: D7 Class Battle Cruiser by Michael McMaster--8 sheets and 1 supplement which give full deck plans of this D6 warship... Deck E9: Cargo/Storage Facilities Cargo holds of all sizes with 2 cargo transporter rooms. The "Star Fleet Handbook" fully backed up these McMaster prints, mentioning that the D6 was almost identical in appearance but lacking the power and vers- atile weaponry of the D7... The Klingonese markings on the side of the original model translate to D74 (D7, 4th commissioned?)... This source gives a somewhat different class listing... Battle Cruisers in the Klingon Imperial Fleet: Annihilation+ Atropos< Carnage <> Conqueror Destruction<> Devisor Exectutioner Furious Invincible<> Kahless Klathas Klolode*< Klothos< Lachesis<> Ruthless Thanatos<> Vengeance< Havoc< *class vessel As you can see, I've indicated where the names given in this early class listing conflict--there're 5 duplicates here! I can only guess that this early on there were goofs made, and it's far less complete a list than that given in the Federation Reference Series... Then there's the undocumented Annihilation, Conqueror, and Ruthless which aren't listed in the FRS D7 class roundup! Possibly these 3 ships were originally of the earlier D6 and mistakenly listed here... Speaking of which, McMaster's Size Comparison Chart (the first of its kind) shows us the "Klingon D7" and "Romulan D6" specs side by side... Briefly, The D7's tonnage is the standard 110,000 while the D6's 108,000--still within standard parameters... However, ship's complement on the D6 is only 293, giving her a Battle Speed of warp 8... Armament on the D6 is LASERS and disruptors along with the cloaking device--the D7 is given phasers, disruptors, and the stasis field generator instead of cloak... Possibly the earlier D6s had lasers instead of phasers? The Cloak vs. Stasis Field is truly variable and I'm sure that All D7 ships in service have Both systems today... Anyhow, next time I'll follow it up with a file on the K't'inga class battle cruiser... Provided that these got out and you guys are interested in reading about another Klingon warship...
